Rosegg Animal Park
Only 5 minutes by car from Velden at Lake Wörthersee, Rosegg animal park has been attracting visitors around the lakes Wörthersee, Faaker See and Ossiacher See for more than 25 years and in all weathers. Almost 80,000 people visit Carinthia’s largest animal park every year, which is home to almost 400 animals of more than 35 different species on an area that is full of history: with the Rosegg castle ruins and the walls around the animal park that were built by the money counterfeiter Knight von Bohr in 1830. A buffet caters for the physical well-being of big and small visitors. An absolute hit for children is the small animal zoo and the large playground.
Rosegg Castle
Rosegg castle has been in the possession of the Liechtenstein family since 1831. Prince Johannes of Liechtenstein acquired the castle from Peter Knight von Bohr for one of his sons. Occupied until the 1970s, nobody lived in the castle again until 1995. Since 1997, the castle has been “occupied” again: Here you can view Austria’s first waxworks with life-size figures. Furthermore, picture exhibitions by contemporary artists, summer events, concerts and theatre performances take place in this castle which also houses a small café.
Rosegg Maze
Austria’s largest garden maze was opened between Rosegg castle and the animal park in July 2001. More than 3,000 hornbeams make up a one kilometre long hedge on an area of 2,400 square metres. A tower in the middle serves as an orientation point. Next to the garden maze, an additional maze was created in a corn field on an area of 1.3 hectares.
